Sometimes Coincidence is a Little Too Close For Comfort

Scene: you have put in a Rare Book request for a Cotton manuscript facsimile (a Cotton Nero manuscript, at that), and the librarian has bustled off downstairs to get it. As soon as her footsteps have faded away on the stairs, the fire alarms start wailing, and the fire doors slam shut with ominous clangs, and Rare Book Librarians appear with green helmets and hustle you out of the building.

Sometimes, coincidence is out to seriously unnerve me. Fortunately, it was merely a matter of someone burning their toast or some such.

Cotton MSS must be especially associated with fire in the parchment hereafter I guess; coincidence on many levels indeed. But, seriously: your Rare Books people have helmets?

  2. highlyeccentric Says:

I think they were Fire Warden Helmets, most of the library staff were sporting them.

Was a Fire Warden Helmet like this one?

  4. Karma Says:

Wow. At least you didn’t have to throw anything out of the window. Did you get to see your facsimile after all, or did they batten down the hatches until they found the Toast Offender?

  5. highlyeccentric Says:

I did get to see it 🙂 Sadly, it didn’t have the information I wanted 😦
